Editorial status
This buying guide uses Apple’s September 2026 product specifications and editorial analysis. Its visuals come from official Apple Newsroom imagery; no AiFolder hands-on camera, battery or thermal measurements have been conducted. Those validations are explicitly pending. Quick verdict
The iPhone Duo is designed for people who value a foldable screen and side-by-side workflows. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is better suited to buyers who prioritize a conventional design and more flexible camera hardware. Both use A20 Pro. This is a specification-based comparison; independent AiFolder measurements are pending.
Compare the interruption in your workflow, not just the screens
Consider a concrete task: a message contains a hotel address, and you need to compare it with a booking confirmation. On a conventional phone, you may move between the message, browser and map. A larger shared workspace can reduce that switching, but only if the applications preserve their state and the layout remains comfortable. That is the kind of difference worth testing before paying for a foldable.
The same larger display may add little to a person who mostly sends short messages, takes photographs and navigates. For that buyer, the more familiar single-screen form can be easier to handle and evaluate. There is no useful universal score that combines a camera preference, grip comfort and multitasking into one number. Start with the task that currently causes the most frustration.
Make a small comparison sheet with three rows: the task, what interrupts it today, and what each device changes. A task that takes fewer switches but becomes uncomfortable to hold is not an unconditional improvement. A phone that is slightly less versatile but reliable for the owner’s daily routine can still be the better purchase.

What changes between the two?
Apple Newsroom visualization of the 5.4-inch outer and 7.6-inch inner display; not independent display testing. Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Its folding design supports multitasking and camera framing that are not possible on a conventional iPhone. Pro Max has a dedicated telephoto camera and a main camera with variable aperture. Those are concrete hardware differences, not proof that every photograph will look better.
Price and availability
Apple's US starting prices are $1,999 for Duo and $1,299 for Pro Max, a $700 difference before taxes or promotions. The Pro Max became available September 18, 2026. Duo pre-orders open October 16, with first-wave availability October 23, including Vietnam. Local retail prices should be checked directly rather than converted from USD. Image: Apple Newsroom. Camera comparisons need a matching scene and matching output
A specification table is useful for identifying what to test, but the test itself needs controlled choices. Photograph the same subject from the same position, at roughly the same time, with the same output size. Avoid comparing one device’s compressed social upload with another device’s original file. A changed distance or light source can overwhelm a subtle difference between cameras.
For a portrait, inspect both the face and fine detail at the boundary between subject and background. For a group, check whether people on different planes remain acceptably sharp. For a distant detail, compare framing before making a judgement about noise or texture. If an image was processed with a special mode, name that mode instead of attributing the entire result to the sensor.
Apple’s product pages establish the available camera controls and lens options; they do not settle which output you will prefer. The most defensible personal comparison includes the original files, a note about settings and a short explanation of which defect mattered. That gives another reader a way to understand the decision without pretending there is one winner for every scene.

Camera decision
Duo offers a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultra-wide camera, rear-camera selfies using its outer display, and fold-assisted framing. Pro Max adds a dedicated 48MP telephoto camera and a 48MP variable-aperture main camera. Choose based on shooting needs rather than untested image-quality assumptions.
Battery and thermal caveats
Apple reports different video-playback figures for Duo's inner and outer screens and for Pro Max. These are vendor claims under specified test conditions, not equivalent AiFolder measurements. The two designs also have different cooling geometry. Sharing A20 Pro does not establish identical sustained frame rates, temperature, or battery drain.
AiFolder test plan
To compare fairly, use matching software versions, brightness, connectivity, ambient temperature and workloads. Measure battery drain in browsing, video, gaming and navigation. Log 30-minute gaming frame times and temperature at fixed intervals. Record camera samples in matched lighting and focal-length conditions. Publish raw methods alongside charts; do not invent results.
Who should buy which?
Duo: readers, mobile multitaskers, foldable enthusiasts and creators who use the outer screen for rear-camera framing. Pro Max: people who prioritize telephoto photography, predictable one-screen ergonomics and lower cost. Wait for reviews: anyone concerned about the first-generation hinge, inner-screen durability, crease visibility, mixed-screen battery or repair cost.
Include ownership friction in the final decision
The purchase price is only one part of ownership. A protective case, the charging equipment you already have, repair arrangements and the time needed to transfer accounts all belong in the comparison. A more expensive device can be worth it if it removes a daily obstacle; a discounted device can be poor value if a required workflow still fails.
Ask the seller to explain the return route, service provider and documentation for the exact unit being purchased. Keep the invoice, model details and advertised offer together. Compare the final checkout total rather than a headline price that assumes a trade-in, financing eligibility or an accessory bundle you do not need. Local conditions differ, so the article does not turn another country’s offer into a Vietnamese promise.
If both phones complete your essential tasks, the decision becomes about preference and ownership risk. If only one does, document that concrete benefit and decide whether it justifies the difference. If the most important questions cannot be answered before launch, waiting for an independent review is more useful than converting an announcement into an imaginary long-term test.

FAQ
Are the processors different?
No. Both use A20 Pro, but sustained performance remains untested by AiFolder.
